The newly designed flag of Iraq was raised in Baghdad today. The flag design was changed to remove the motto of Saddam Hussein's Baath Party and to be more inclusive of the Kurds.
I believe it symbolizes progress.
As a band played the Iraqi national anthem, officials lowered the old flag and hoisted a new, temporary one at an official ceremony at Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's office in Baghdad's Green Zone.Just like the controversial Confederate flag in the U.S., there are those who oppose the new design and continue to fly the old flag. But those who insist on unity are proudly flying the new design.
The new flag does not include symbols from the Saddam Hussein era. And the design was altered to appease Iraqi Kurds, who demanded changes to the Hussein-era flag.
It's a temporary flag approved last week by the president and two vice presidents. The Iraqi parliament has one year to agree on a permanent flag.
I believe it symbolizes progress.

Just like the controversial Confederate flag in the U.S.......
I don't think it's anything like it at all. That would be like comparing there new flag to our Old Glory...in that they are more than 'just flags'
johns, maybe I should have elaborated on that analogy.
I was talking about the emotions involved with people who are offended by the "old" flags. Many feel the Confederate flag is symbolic of slavery. Many feel the old Iraqi flag is symbolic of the slaughter and torture of the Kurds.
The emotional responses are similar. I didn't say I agreed with either viewpoint, just that there are those who aren't happy with the flag change.
