Senator Barack Obama (D-IL).

In an interview with ABC's Robin Roberts, Senator Obama explains why he has been sighted wearing the flag lapel pin. Newsbuster Scott Whitlock reports:
BARACK OBAMA: Right. You know, I've had so many supporters, a lot of them veterans, who have been handing me flag pins saying Barack, we know how patriotic you are and do us a favor, we would appreciate if you wore it. Partly just, not because, I think, they wanted proof of patriotism, but they wanted the issue taken off the table. I'm happy to wear a flag pin. It's something that I'm proud to do.
Contrast that with his reason for not wearing it late last year.
Instead the Illinois senator answered the question at length, explaining that he no longer wears such a pin, at least in part, because of the Iraq War.

"You know, the truth is that right after 9/11, I had a pin," Obama said. "Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq War, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security, I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest.
And his stance was applauded with these headlines (for example):

"Bravo, Barack Obama! American flag pins are for idiots." Bill Maher

"Phony Issue of the Day" Joe Klein

"Phony Patriots Smear Barack Obama" Taylor Marsh

But since Barack Obama has started wearing the pin again occasionally, do these critics think that Obama is an "idiot" pandering to "phony issues" advocated by "phony patriots"?

Oh, I see. Since the flip-flopping lapel pin is prompted by his supporters all is copacetic and this is a non-issue, at least where the lefty bloggers, liberal pundits and biased media are concerned.

Truth be told, I couldn't care less if he embraced the flag pin or not, but that he flip-flops on the issue and makes a weak justification for doing so seems all the more relevant. If Obama is so easily swayed by his supporters to wear a flag lapel pin in order to take the issue off table, would Obama wear a pin which supports Israel? After all, that should take that whole Hamas support issue off the table too, right? I wonder.

I hate the populist thing. That is why I didn't like Huckabee. Ugh.

Wow... this so painfully unimportant it's embarassing. When you run into states like WV full of ridiculous hicks that can't see beyond the blank lapels, it's an infantessimal consession to make.

How about confronting him on some of the ISSUES, like the possibility that he'd increase the capital gains tax to be "fair" even if it resulted in a decrease in both private sector and federal income as a result?

This subject is some of the fluffiest nonsense I've ever seen.

    Anonymous,

I'm sure the folks in WV would appreciate your condescending comments.

Like I said in my post, I couldn't care less about the pin wearing or not. The bigger issue is his need to pander, which I cautioned all politicians about in a previous post today. I don't think McCain's saying he'd fix New Orleans post-Katrina was an infantessimal concession either. It was downright offensive to do all this "when in Rome" pandering.

I'd be happy to discuss B.O.'s stance on social security if you'd like. Why not blog on it and I'll come leave a comment on your post? Heh.

But thanks for taking the time to read my fluff. :)

Hey, I'M not running for president, so I'm not afraid to say it. West Virginia's chief export is one which they seem to have in limitless supply: Ignorance.

Make no mistake, I'm not an Obama supporter. I'm just saying there are far more substantial things to discuss; social security being one of them. I'm just of the opinion that when we lower our discourse to trivia and fluff, it hurts the country as a whole.

There isn't a single person running in either of the main parties that I'd feel good about voting for. The GOP is a disfigured mutant husk of its former glory, and the Democratic party is as unacceptable as ever.

My choices are welfare-state socialism or imperialist corporate fascism? No thanks. Now I'm just trying to decide which third party to "throw my vote away" to.

Anonymous, Thanks for returning. Look I'm completely with you on the choices this year. Few want to discuss issues of substance. I tried relentlessly to discuss issues of substance when we had other GOP candidates in the mix still. Apparently not many people agreed with me.

Since I can't blog anything nice about McCain, I try to focus on the hypocrisy issues of the others. The pandering is really insulting and I intend to address it here, even if it is about something silly like a flag pin. It goes to the lack of substance of all of them. Just sayin'...

Maybe you'll come back and find a piece that isn't so fluffy next time. :)
